On coastal shores, it's hard to completely banish dreams of pirates and mermaids from the mind. Most of us at some point or another will be captivated by the folklore of silky songs dragging sailors to their deaths and the dangerous brigades of those who fought their way across our seas. If you find yourself along the Oregon coast and in the doubloon stealing spirit, be sure to stop by Pirate Coffee Company which has been voted "the best of the best". Outside its whitewashed walls you can enjoy the custom built Pirate's Promenade Deck and the large wooden pelican that guards its entrance. Be sure to walk the plank to the front door first and loose yourself in a pirate filled world.

Immediately you are turned away from "Private Quarters" and sent towards a creaky wooden door with caution tape marking its midsection. If you dare go through you'll be awarded with ship wheels, piratey goods to take home and wood crafted sea creatures. If you wander to the back of the store, you'll find less than piratey, but still fun, merchandise and just over the shelfs, the machines they use to roast their coffee.  Pirate Coffee Company was started 15 years ago in Texas, or as their barista stated, "they had it way before Pirates of the Caribbean". When the couple retired, they picked up their family, packed up shop and moved Pirate Coffee to the streets of Depoe Bay, OR. Eventually, the couple would step back from their brewing days and their child would take over the wheel. The barista couldn't speak highly enough of the family in the four years she had worked for them and it's clear they care for their employees too as she said "they've adopted me".

With drink names such as Blackbeard's Ghost and Spicy Wench, it was more than difficult to choose what to try. Though I can't testify to if they truly have the best of the best coffee, the Spicy Wench was more then incredible. Her promise of butter rum and dirty chai was too much for me to turn away from and I would make the same decision in a heartbeat.

When you go to this shop, take time to talk with the Staff and your coffee is sure to be served with an "arg". If you're feeling extra adventurous, kiss the pirate on your way out for an extra dose of luck.
